Changing dash lights on a 1998 Chevy Malibu?

I have a '98 Chevy Malibu that I inheired from my Grandma. The dash lights have never worked. All the warning lights work as well as the backlight on the tripometer. However, the lights that illumate the dash so that you can see your speed, rpm, fuel level, etc., don't work. I've changed the fuse at least three times, but think it might be the light bulbs themselves. The manual doesn't show me how to fix it, just tells me to change the fuse. What should I do?

Most cars nowadays, have the ability to be able to pull the trim off around the gauges, and then you should be able to remove the gauge assembly itself. When pulling it out, be cautious of wires in the back, try to disconnect them, and your gauges should be free to take away. Then, on the back side is a set of thumb tabs, with the bulbs inside. Twist them, usually counterclockwise about a quarter turn, and pull. The bulb is held into the tab. pull the bulb, and get your replacements, or check them to see if they are bad. Then reverse procedure when you have found them, and replaced them. Good luck.

Did you check the dashlight switch on the dash. Its the switch you vary the intensity of the dash lights with. If you turn it all the way up the interior light come on.
